Title I, Part A is designed to assist schools with large percentages of low-income students in the area of academic instruction, specifically, reading, mathematics, and science. Schools receive allocations based on poverty-census formula, and then can make numerous choices on what to do with the funds, based on academic need. The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have a fair, equitable, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.
